Lenox is an outgoing 8-year-old whose favorite place to be is outside no matter the weather. She is diagnosed with Autism as well as a language disorder that impacts her ability to understand language as well as tell others what she wants and needs. One of the first things Lenox asks for when she gets home from school is ”outside”. Her family has a big, beautiful yard with a swing set, trampoline, and water table that she loves to use. Unfortunately, Lenox lacks safety awareness and requires constant adult supervision to keep her safe. Someone needs to be outside with her to be sure she doesn’t wander off, which she often does. She will see something she is interested in and just go to it without recognizing the many potential dangers. Close to their home is a very busy road and a pond. Lenox loves water and wants to visit the ducks that live there, but this also poses additional safety risks.

Safety Fence for Lenox
The family hopes to build a fence around their yard so that when Lenox comes home from school or on the weekends she can go right outside and enjoy all the things she loves without their constant fear for her safety. Many children Lenox’s age can go outside, spend time with friends and when their parents call, they will come running. With Lenox’s limitations in safety awareness and following directions, she doesn’t have the same luxury. If she wants to go outside, she needs to have someone with her. What if her parents are busy? What if they just don’t want to go outside at that moment? What if her brother is inside playing and her mom can’t be in both places at the same time? Lenox will be told ”no” or ”wait” which can trigger her to become upset. One of the many things she is working on. Imagine having to rely on others constantly to be able to do the things you want to do. With a fence her parents can do what they need to do while ensuring Lenox's safety.
Being outside not only brings her great joy, but it also helps her regulate her emotions and sensory needs. Sometimes when Lenox is upset about something else, going outside will help her feel better. Having a fence will strengthen her ability to be independent, engage in leisure skills, and allow for the natural development of motor skills without the need for constant adult support and supervision.
Lenox and her family greatly appreciate all donations to assist in increasing her independence and safety at home. Any additional donations will be used to extend the fence and create a large space for Lenox to run, jump, play and explore.
We thank you!
