Lucas is the grandson of one of our employee owners here at The Brook.. He is special 9-year-old who faces challenges most of us can’t imagine. He has been diagnosed with Chiari malformation type I and Dysgenesis of the corpus callosum (brain disorder where the left side and the right side do not communicate), along with developmental delays, has stereotypic disorder, autism, hypotonia spectrum disorder, and seizure-like activity. He was born with this condition.

Because of these complex medical needs, Lucas struggles with safety—especially at night. He is still in a crib. He has difficulty understanding danger, experiences uncontrolled movements, and is at risk of injury if he is not in a secure environment. Sleep, something many take for granted, can be one of the most stressful and unsafe times for him and his family.

Lucas urgently needs a specialized enclosed safety bed designed for children with medical and developmental conditions. This bed will:

• Keep him safe during the night

• Prevent falls and injury during seizure-like episodes

• Providing a calming, secure environment

• Give his caregivers peace of mind

Unfortunately, this bed comes at a cost of about $12,000, and it is not covered by insurance. This bed is a Cubby1.
